Gas prices have risen substantially this year due to the war with Iran. Before the war started in February gas prices were just under $3.00/gallon nationally. Since the beginning of the war they’ve now spiked to well over $4.00/gallon. Here in Michigan the cost of gas hit $5/gallon at several points in the last few months. In total, people across the United States have spent an additional $83 billion on gas, costing the average family an additional $699.

The U.S. House of Representatives has taken 6 votes on war powers resolutions regarding the conflict, most recently on September 15, 2026 when it passed successfully. Initially Michigan’s Congressmen Tom Barrett (MI-07), John James (MI-10), and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) all supported the war and voted in favor of giving the president authority to continue it. Congressman Barrett eventually changed his stance and began voting to end the war while Congressmen James and Huizenga have continued to vote in support of it.

The war has resulted in a reduction in oil being transported through the Strait of Hormuz as well as the destruction of oil fields and pipelines throughout the Middle East. This reduction in oil supply has resulted in the price of crude oil rising from approximately $65/barrel when the war started to over $90/barrel today. Diesel prices have hit record highs and are nearly $3/gallon more in Michigan than they were a year ago.

As of today the United States and Iran reportedly remain far apart in negotiations to end the war, meaning high gas prices are likely to continue for months to come, adding to an estimated $4,200 in increased costs for goods and services in Michigan under President Trump.
