As Supreme Court Weighs Trump's Tariffs, Barrett and James Continue to Let Michigan Families Pay the Price
As the Supreme Court hears oral arguments this week on whether President Trump and Republicans’ in Congress sweeping tariffs are legal, Michigan families continue to suffer from policies that Congressmen Tom Barrett and John James have repeatedly refused to challenge.
"As a small business owner, I see every day how these tariffs are putting pressure on Michigan families and small businesses," said Alex Bronson, owner of Blackout Painting. "Congressmen Barrett and James have had chance after chance to stop these policies that are driving up costs for working people, but they've chosen to give Trump a blank check instead. Grocery prices are up, basic goods like beef are way up, and families are making impossible choices between necessities—all while our representatives do nothing. These tariffs are costing Michigan families our hard earned savings. Michigan families deserve representatives who will fight for them, not ones who repeatedly choose partisan politics over the economic wellbeing of the people they're supposed to serve."
The tariffs increase taxes on families by an average of $1,000 in 2025, and by $1,300 per household every year after. Despite multiple opportunities to limit these cost-raising tariffs, both Barrett and James have votedrepeatedly to shield the Trump administration from accountability, choosing to let Michigan families bear the burden of higher prices rather than standing up for their constituents. In an effort to hold them accountable, Michigan Families for Fair Care has been running ads featuring local residents, and the effect that tariffs have had on their lives.
