Health Coverage And Food Assistance Enrollment Is Dropping In Michigan — And James, Huizenga, And Barrett Voted For It
Nearly a year after the Republican Tax Law was signed, new reports confirm that Americans are losing health care coverage and food assistance. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that SNAP participation fell by 4 million people since the law was passed, and Protect Our Care reported that Medicaid and ACA enrollment fell by over 5 million. Michigan Representatives John James (MI-10), Tom Barrett (MI-07), and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) all voted for the Republican Tax Law.
Michigan families are feeling the impacts of Congressmen James, Barrett, and Huizenga’s policies. Roughly 34,000 fewer Michiganders signed up for marketplace coverage this year, after the Republicans let ACA health care tax credits expire, causing premiums to skyrocket. And, over 67,000 Medicaid enrollees in Michigan lost their health care coverage since the law was enacted. On top of that, recently announced Medicaid rules that were passed as part of the Republican Tax Law could cause people with serious illnesses like cancer to lose coverage.
Michiganders are also being hit hard by the deep cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in the Republican Tax Law. The state has seen an 8 percent drop in SNAP participation, with the number of enrollees decreasing from 1,524,920 in July 2025 to 1,366,321 in March 2026.
“Since Representative James and Republicans voted last year to cut SNAP and Medicaid, things have only gotten worse for people who were counting on these programs,” said Rebecca, a Medicaid and SNAP recipient and resident of Michigan’s 10th District. “Families don’t deserve to lose the coverage that keeps them healthy and the food assistance that keeps their kids fed. Representative James should fix these policies before more of his constituents have to pay the price for his vote.”
Costs are already going up across the board for Michiganders, and the last thing they need is their representatives making life more expensive. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen James, Barrett, and Huizenga to put hardworking families first by restoring Medicaid and SNAP and lowering health care costs.
