Huizenga, James, and Barrett Backed Illegal Tariffs Driving Up Michigan Prices — Now Trump Imposes Another Round

On Monday, Trump announced new 50% tariffs on Canada, and days earlier, his administration announced it would impose a new 25% tariff on Brazil. Meanwhile, Michigan families are still suffering the cost of the illegal tariffs that Trump imposed last year.

Tariffs have cost Michigan families an average of $1,000 per year and have hurt both the agriculture and manufacturing industries that are major employers in the state. Michigan retailers have been affected, too, with nearly 75% saying they have been negatively impacted by tariffs. And families have been forced to pay higher prices for groceries because of the tariffs. 

Despite all of this, Representatives John James (MI-10), Bill Huizenga (MI-04), and Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted against reining in the tariffs that hurt Michigan small businesses. But when it came to a vote to give tax breaks to billionaires, the three Congressmen had no trouble supporting that. 

“Running a small business is how I support my family,” said Alex, a business owner in Michigan's 10th Congressional District. “The tariffs have made it harder for me to make ends meet. Congressman James backed these tariffs, and there’s no relief in sight, just threats of more. I wish he’d stick up for business owners like me instead of billionaires.” 

Michigan families and small businesses are already paying the price for the tariffs Reps. Huizenga, James, and Barrett backed — they don’t need everyday prices climbing even higher. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen Huizenga, James, and Barrett to put their constituents first and oppose new tariffs that will only raise costs more.
