ICYMI: Michigan Small Business Owner Michael Howard Talks Impact Of Canada Tariffs

As the deadline looms for a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, Michiganders are preparing for the impact on local business. Michael Howard, who owns Warren-based Howard Family Designs, spoke with CBC News about how the added lumber cost from tariffs will threaten his family business.

“Knowing that these tariffs were coming I’ve been stockpiling wood because I’m worried the cost will go up,” Michael Howard said. “I’ve already had to make cuts at my business because of tariffs, and a new tariff on lumber is going to make it an even tighter squeeze for my family. We’re feeling the increased cost of everything from gas to groceries to school supplies, and the 50% tariff on Canada is only going to make it worse. I wish my Congressman John James would opposed these tariffs that are making life worse for families like mine.”

Michigan Congressmen Barrett (MI-07), James (MI-10), and Huizenga (MI-04) have repeatedly voted for tariffs, which are driving up costs for Michigan businesses like Michael Howard’s and leaving working families dealing with higher prices across the board.
