Michigan Families for Fair Care And Punks With Lunch Lansing Partner for Winter Clothing & Food Drive

Michigan Families for Fair Care partnered with Punks with Lunch Lansing on Saturday for a Winter Clothing & Food Drive at Reuter Park, bringing together community members to support neighbors facing affordability challenges. The event collected winter clothing, food, and basic supplies for local families struggling with increased costs during the winter months.

As families across Michigan's 7th Congressional District continue struggling with affordability challenges due to cost-increasing tariffs, which our own Rep. Tom Barrett voted for, local organizations are working together to ensure neighbors have access to warm clothing and essential supplies during the coldest months. The community drive and partnership between local organizations reflected a commitment to ensuring neighbors have access to warm clothing and food supplies, especially as the cost of housing, transportation, and everyday needs increased $1606 last year. Concern continues to grow as families realize how much of their money has been eaten up by reckless policy.

“When SNAP and Medicaid are cut to fund trillions in tax cuts for the wealthy, the result is a lot of people going without this winter season. The Republican Tax Law and tariffs threaten a family’s ability to survive, especially in these conditions. We have families counting on us to deliver, because they don’t have anyone else who will.” said Steve Lawson with Michigan Families for Fair Care. “So we are going to keep doing our best to provide for those that need it because children shouldn’t have to walk in the cold without a coat no matter their income level.”

“I'm a retiree living on a fixed income. When my health insurance premium doubles to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy and groceries cost more because of tariffs, where does Congress think we get the money to survive all this? So many people like me have done their time contributing to the economy, now we’re expected to have multiple jobs to maintain the same quality of life we’ve had for decades,” said MI-07 resident Diane Holland. “When I learned the Republican Tax Law cut health care for the rich's tax cuts, it was hard not to feel despair. Events like this clothing drive remind me that the people in our community are still here, and we’ll continue looking out for one another."

Michigan Families for Fair Care continues to educate residents about economic issues impacting local families and the importance of policies that support working families across the district.
