On Friday, Michigan Families for Fair Care hosted “Cribs & Community,” a community baby shower and supply drive at Farrell Park in Kalamazoo. Neighbors dropped off diapers, wipes, formula, baby clothes, bottles, and burp cloths, which were handed out to local families on a first-come, first-served basis.
The costs of raising a baby keep climbing, and the Medicaid cuts in the Republican Tax Law are making health care harder to reach for new moms and babies. For families in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, that means more worry over prenatal visits, delivery, and checkups at the moments they matter most. Congressman Bill Huizenga voted for the Republican Tax Law that made those cuts.
“I’m glad we have a community that can organize essential supplies like diapers, clothes, formulas, that people can struggle to afford these days. On the other hand, there are more people out there that need help, and bigger things need to happen for all of us to start doing better. ” said Casey, MI-04 resident. “Many people are just now learning about programs that are losing funding because of laws passed months ago. More people will also realize it doesn’t have to be this way. But a lot more people are going to get hurt along the way, and a lot of people are going to continue to worry as they stare at bills that are due.”
