Michigan Households Have Paid $5,619 More Because of Tariffs Championed by Huizenga, James, and Barrett
A recent report found Michigan faces the highest per-household cost in the nation—at $5,619—because of the Trump tariffs. But Michigan Republican Congressmen Bill Huizenga (MI-04), John James (MI-10), and Tom Barrett (MI-07) have defended the tariffs at every turn, disregarding the damage done to Michigan families and local businesses.
“The rising cost of construction materials like steel and lumber over the last year has hurt businesses like mine,” said Alex, who runs a construction business in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. “It’s already hard enough to keep a small company up and running, but Congressman James hasn’t done us any favors by voting to support the tariffs. I wish he would speak out against them so Michigan businesses wouldn’t have to face higher costs.”
Last week, Rep. Huizenga put the blame on Canada for stalled trade negotiations, failing to acknowledge he voted at least four times to continue the tariffs driving the trade war. In recent interviews, Reps. James and Barrett emphasized the importance of trade with Canada, but sidestepped their votes for tariffs that are driving up costs for Michiganders.
Among Michigan industries hit the hardest are the auto industry, steel and aluminum, and machinery and parts. And with new Canadian tariffs set to start next week, businesses and consumers are bracing for even higher prices. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen James, Huizenga, and Barrett to stand up for the families they represent by opposing the tariffs.
