Running on Empty: Michigan Families for Fair Care and Indivisible Rally Outside Rep. Huizenga's Office Over Rising Gas Prices

On Friday, August 14, Michigan Families for Fair Care and Indivisible rallied outside the Portage office of Congressman Bill Huizenga to call out his continued support for policies keeping gas prices high. With gas prices in Kalamazoo still above $4 a gallon, residents of Michigan's 4th Congressional District are tired of Huizenga backing policies that keep them high. Constituents are demanding that Huizenga stop supporting the expensive Iran conflict and start fighting for relief.

Congressman Huizenga supported the Iran War from the start, and as recently as July 23, voted against ending it. Michiganders have paid at least $502 more per household for gas since it began in February. While families struggle to afford fuel, Huizenga has refused to take action to bring down prices and end the costly conflict. Michigan Families for Fair Care and partners called out Rep. Huizenga for his failure to stop a war that benefits no one but defense contractors, while working families foot the bill.

“Gas prices have been out of control for months here in Michigan, and with the cost of everything from groceries to health care up, it’s been a struggle to make ends meet,” said Mike, a veteran who lives in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District. “Congressman Huizenga has had many chances to bring costs down, and, instead, he keeps voting for a war that is raising our gas prices.”

The rally reflected growing frustration among MI-04 residents who are facing the real-world consequences of Huizenga's votes. As gas prices remain elevated and families continue to stretch their budgets to afford fuel, the congressman has refused to listen to constituents calling for an end to the expensive conflict abroad. Rather than fighting to bring down costs, Huizenga continues to back policies that keep prices high while ordinary Michiganders pay the price at the pump.
