THE BIG, BAD, AND THE UGLY: AS CONGRESS VOTES TO REAFFIRM THE REPUBLICAN TAX LAW, MICHIGANDERS CONTINUE TO AIR THEIR FRUSTRATIONS

The Republican Tax Law is proving to be a hollow promise for non-billionaires across the state as Congressmen Bill Huizenga, John James and Tom Barrett have just voted to reaffirm it. That hasn’t stopped Republicans in Congress from considering a resolution to reaffirm their support of the costly legislation. Rising costs of food and energy bills have stripped away hardworking people from their savings as many continue to struggle in the current economic climate. For residents living on fixed incomes, this financial pressure is compounded by support from representatives like Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and John James whose original vote for the Republican Tax Law slashed Medicaid and SNAP benefits, leaving vulnerable constituents to bridge the gap in an increasingly volatile economy.

“They talk about a bill that’s supposed to be saving us money, but it doesn’t make much of a dent when it comes to affording growing electricity bills, health care bills, and prices at the grocery store,” said Sheila, an MI-07 resident and Tom Barrett constituent. “When you’re on a fixed budget, these so-called savings don’t put food on the table when you have to pay almost $2000 more on everything else. This bill hasn’t made life easier; it has made it unaffordable by ignoring the real costs hitting the working class every single day. Now they are doubling down on the Republican Tax Law that cut Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and corporations, raising costs for middle-class families. We urge our Republican congressional delegation to work on lowering costs and getting our money back.”
