The Iran War Is Back—And So Are Higher Gas Prices For Michigan Families

As the Iran War escalates following the collapse of a ceasefire, oil prices are surging. Gas prices are expected to increase again, with one analyst predicting that the break in the ceasefire could cause the national average to rise to $4 per gallon. With summer travel in full swing, Michiganders may be paying more at the pump once again as a result of the costly war continuing to drag on.

Michigan families have Reps. Bill Huizenga (MI-04) and John James (MI-10) partially to blame for the expected gas price spike. Given the opportunity in June to end the Iran War, Congressmen Huizenga and James both voted no. Both representatives also voted against ending the war in May. And, in March, Reps. Huizenga and James voted against a war powers resolution that sought to end the conflict. Time and time again, these representatives failed to listen to their constituents, backing a war that cost Michiganders more.

“Every time I think I might catch a break with gas prices, they jump right back up,” said Jeanette, a constituent of Rep. Bill Huizenga in Michigan's 4th District. “I try my best to budget carefully, but the months of elevated gas prices have really put a stress on my wallet. I wish Congressman Huizenga would have voted to end the war when he had a chance, but instead he’s left us paying more.”

When Michigan families needed their representatives to rein in an open-ended war, Huizenga and James voted to let it continue. Now, Michiganders are absorbing the cost at the pump. Michigan Families for Fair Care urges Reps. Huizenga and James to put their constituents first and back policies that bring down everyday costs.
