Tom Barrett and John James Vote to Keep Gutting Medicaid and SNAP Funding, Prioritizing Tax Breaks for the Ultra-Wealthy… Again
Representatives Tom Barrett (MI-07) and John James (MI-10) voted in favor of a government funding bill that continues to prioritize massive tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy at the expense of critical programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This vote comes at a time when hundreds of thousands of Michiganders rely on these programs for food and healthcare, and will have disastrous consequences for families across the state, particularly in Lansing and Warren.
"The actions taken by Republicans in Congress this year are expected to impact hundreds of thousands of Michiganders," said Steve Lawson, Executive Director for Michigan Families for Fair Care. "People's fear about the future of Medicaid and SNAP requires truthful reassurance and a plan of action from our electeds. Instead, Rep. John James and Tom Barrett are ignoring their constituents and pushing a heartless agenda. We urge residents to stay informed about the continued chaos coming from Republicans in Congress as we work to hold those responsible accountable for their votes."
James and Barrett’s vote puts hundreds of thousands of over 450,000 Michiganders at risk of losing health insurance and an estimated 123,000 Michiganders will lose all or a portion of their SNAP benefits. These cuts will make it harder for parents, veterans, and senior Michigan residents to provide for themselves and their families.
