Triple Threat: Barrett, Huizenga And James To Vote For Legislation That Threatens Social Security, Medicare, And Medicaid

With the House set to vote this week on legislation that would put Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid at risk, Michigan Families for Fair Care is urging Congressmen Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and John James to oppose a measure that threatens the programs thousands of Michigan families count on to survive.

“Congressmen Barrett, Huizenga, and James have already voted to cut Medicaid and food assistance to pad the pockets of billionaires. Now they want to triple down by voting for legislation that would threaten Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for the millions of Michiganders who depend on them every single day.” said Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care.  “This isn’t an abstraction. It’s retirement security. It’s health care coverage. It’s food on the table. We are calling on Congressmen Barrett, Huizenga and James to vote no and to finally put their constituents ahead of the wealthy donors who already got their tax break.”

The proposed measure would result in shortfalls to the federal budget that would fall squarely on programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ benefits, and food assistance. This vote doesn’t happen in a vacuum: Barrett, Huizenga, and James already voted for the Republican Tax Law, which slashed billions from Medicaid and food assistance to bankroll permanent tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.

Now they’re being asked to go even further, cementing a system that makes it nearly impossible to ask the wealthy to pay their fair share while leaving critical programs vulnerable to cuts that would devastate working families across Michigan’s 4th, 7th and 10th Congressional Districts.
