We Got Six on It: Gas Prices Spike 60 Cents as House Holds Sixth War Powers Vote With No End to Iran Conflict in Sight

Families in Kalamazoo and Lansing are now paying more than $4.50 a gallon at the pump. Michigan saw the largest gas price increase in the nation, with parts of West Michigan averaging a 60 cent increase. Michigan drivers are feeling the weight of these costs. Across the state, the average price per gallon has surged, increasing by nearly 50% in the last year. This comes at a time when prices have gone up with few exceptions. Under recent Trump administration tariffs, families are struggling to afford groceries like coffee, ground beef, and chicken, and are increasingly turning to shopping secondhand to save money on clothes. And even though the House passed yesterday’s war powers resolution, most House Republicans voted in opposition. 

"I have a budget that I have to make work month after month, and I made the decision to park the car and start riding my bike to get where I need to go. It's because when gas prices spike, it is essential to have a backup plan. I'm already paying more at the grocery store for the same things I bought last year. A lot of my neighbors are having to do the same math.” said Cam, MI-04 resident. “It feels like too little, too late from the House  after my savings have been dwindling down for months." 

Given the opportunity to end the Iran War, Republicans in Congress, in the past, have largely voted no, including Congressman Bill Huizenga, Tom Barrett, and John James. The war itself is already costing taxpayers billions. Multiple American servicemembers have been killed, and the scope and duration of the conflict remain unclear. A majority of Americans oppose the war, and Michigan families deserve to know more so they can plan their own lives without continued uncertainty.
