Congressmen John James and Tom Barrett, You Have Put Your State In Danger
Representative John James (MI-10) and Representative Tom Barrett (MI-07) have voted again to support the devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP while ignoring the pending crisis of skyrocketing health insurance premiums that will leave millions uninsured. With this vote, Reps. James and Barrett have co-signed an agenda that leaves hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who rely on these essential programs for survival without options. This comes at a time when families across the country are facing high costs at the grocery store or utility bill, and no solution has been provided, just promises to discuss it after the votes have been taken.
MI-10 constituent, SNAP and Medicaid recipient Rebecca Zainos issued the following statement after James' vote:
"Rep. John James has now voted to take away the health care of thousands of people in our district more than he’s been willing to talk to them. As someone who depends on Medicaid to manage to live, I'm terrified about what will happen now. Millions of people will lose coverage, why? So billionaires can get another tax break. Congressman James, this shutdown was a cry for help because people are going to lose everything. This isn't just about policy - this is about real people who will suffer."
MI-07 constituent, SNAP and Medicaid recipient Cynthia Burton issued the following statement after Barrett’s vote:
"I've witnessed Medicaid's importance through my own experience. Countless other families depend on it just like we did. I cannot understand why Congressman Tom Barrett would choose to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans instead of safeguarding the health care that Michiganders rely on and work on making it more affordable. We won't stop fighting against the damaging cuts House Republicans are pushing forward. Congressman Barrett, you cannot continue to turn away from us. You said you would be willing to discuss making health care more affordable after the shutdown, well the time has come."
