Constituents Call on Congressman John James To Not Vote on Cuts to Medicaid

Today, Representative John James (MI10) alongside his House Committee Members in Energy and Commerce will vote on a budget proposal that could make severe cuts to Medicaid, an essential program used by thousands of Michiganders.

MI-10 constituent and Mount Clemens City Commissioner, Spencer Calhoun, issued the following statement ahead of today’s markup:

“As someone who relied on Medicaid to help me survive as a child, I implore John James to think about his position on Medicaid and make a choice that does not risk the health care of nearly 200,000 families in his district alone. This is needless cutting of important programs to fund excess tax breaks for the wealthy, the priorities on this issue are absurd, and you know it and have admitted as much on the record. House Republicans are considering pushing families off healthcare and to the brink of financial collapse, which could have generational repercussions for decades, there is no reason we need to make these cuts. John James, do not rip away health care from your constituents to fund these tax cuts for billionaires by ripping away health care from your constituents.”

Rep. John James has made claims that he “would not touch Medicaid”, but he already voted in favor of a plan that tees up hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cuts to Medicaid. Additionally, the Trump administration has made it clear these cuts to Medicaid will be used to finance billions in tax breaks for billionaires.
