Constituents Rally to tell Congressman Tom Barrett: “Social Security Must Be Protected”
Today, Michigan Families for Fair Care and Bee Accepting held a rally to bring attention to how the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts to the Social Security Administration would impact the lives of vulnerable Michiganders and their families.
“Working class Michiganders are scared about the attacks against Social Security.” said Sheila Kniffin, MI-07 constituent. “As someone on a fixed income, I know that any delays or disruptions to benefits could mean going without food or even shelter. Representative Tom Barrett is aware of the hardships his constituents are facing, but he has yet to show his face in the district. People gathered today because Social Security is worth protecting, and no matter what policy plans this administration has, they should not be financed by sacrificing the most vulnerable in our communities.”
The Trump Administration and DOGE have targeted the Social Security Administration in their mission to slash funding to services long seen as foundational to Americans. Thousands of workers have already been let go, and dozens of offices are expected to shutter their doors. Meanwhile, Social Security beneficiaries are concerned about potential delays in receiving their benefits, which could have disastrous consequences to fixed-income households.
