It Is Game Time Barrett! Michigan Families for Fair Care Calls On Lansing Representative To Address Rising Costs

Michigan Families for Fair Care took action this Michigan/Michigan State game to call attention to how Congressman Tom Barrett's votes have contributed to rising costs crushing Michigan families. This Saturday, our organization launched a billboard and digital advertising campaign highlighting constituent concerns about the economic struggles facing the Lansing area and Michigan's 7th Congressional District.

The multi-platform campaign—featuring the tailgate, billboard, and digital ads—aims to hold Barrett accountable for his role in Michigan families' economic struggles and demand action on lowering healthcare costs, addressing rising prices, and reopening the government.

"Game day came at a great time and we needed some excitement, but if we’re being honest families in our community are struggling. They're worried about making their mortgage payments, they're seeing their neighbors laid off, and they're watching costs climb month after month," said Michigan Families for Fair Care Executive Director Steve Lawson. "Now they're facing premiums that could rise by 20% or more, and the options for help are looking bleak. We need Congressman Barrett to act and make health care more affordable for the people in his district and reopen the government."

Families across the district are struggling to make payments at the grocery store, afford rising energy bills, and healthcare premiums may soon double. Lansing area plants may also have projects terminated, which is adding to worker concerns. Meanwhile, the federal government remains shut down because Republicans like Tom Barrett refuse to address the real issues facing families—including the looming healthcare crisis that will cause insurance premiums to rise by nearly 20% or more for thousands of Michigan residents.

Barrett voted for the Republican Tax Law that enacted historic cuts to Medicaid and prioritized tax breaks for billionaires over healthcare affordability. Barrett also backed tariffsrepeatedly, leaving many in his community with questions about what he is doing to lower costs. He has refused to meet with constituents in town halls despite over 2,000 petitions requesting face-to-face conversations. Now, as the government shutdown threatens military member pay and ACA tax credits are set to expire, Barrett remains absent from both Washington and his district, offering no solutions to the crises his votes helped create.
