Michigan Families For Fair Care Hosts “Backpack Block Party" to Help MI-04 Families With Rising Back-to-School Costs

On Friday, Michigan Families for Fair Care hosted the “Backpack Block Party" school supply drive in Kalamazoo. The event, which featured music, free food, face painting, and a backpack giveaway, was part of the Republican Price Tag campaign to help families deal with rising costs as the school year approaches. Under Congressman Bill Huizenga, residents of Michigan’s 4th Congressional District are burdened with higher costs of back-to-school supplies, and have paid $3,500 more just to cover basic needs like groceries and gas.

Instead of fighting to lower costs for his constituents, Rep. Huizenga has consistently supported policies driving prices higher. He backed tariffs that are contributing to record high prices of goods like coffee and beef, and has repeatedly supported the Iran War that has left gas prices soaring. And when Rep. Huizenga had the opportunity to lower health insurance costs by restoring the health care tax credits, he voted against it.

“With families struggling to cover back-to-school costs, it’s important we step up as a community to support those in need,” said Rep. Julia Rogers, who represents Kalamazoo in the Michigan House. “But, our Congressman Bill Huizenga isn’t doing his part to help the families he represents. He needs to focus more on lowering the cost of school supplies, groceries, and health care for Michiganders.”

With back-to-school season around the corner, families in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District will be paying more for everything from classroom supplies to filling the gas tank to drive to school. Michigan Families for Fair Care will continue to call on Rep. Huizenga to stop making life more expensive for Michiganders and start fighting for lower costs.
