After Barrett, James, and Huizenga's Medicaid Cuts, a Dozen Michigan Health Care Centers Have Closed — And More Are in Danger

A new report shows that since Congressmen John James (MI-10), Bill Huizenga (MI-04), and Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted for drastic Medicaid cuts, Michigan rural hospitals and health care centers have faced devastating effects.

As of this month, 23 health care centers in Michigan have either closed, announced cuts or upcoming closures, or are at risk. This includes 12 centers that have already shut their doors, among them Planned Parenthood locations, hospitals, and labor and delivery units. These closures, which have impacted rural facilities like Aspirus Ironwood Hospital and Sturgis Hospital, mean that patients in rural areas will have to travel longer distances to access the care they need.

"It's hard to watch my patients put off care because hospitals and clinics are closing around them,” said Ashley, a nurse in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “Congressman Barrett voted for these health care cuts, and I see what that means every single day. Families in Michigan deserve better than a representative who votes to cut their health care coverage and close their hospitals.”

In July 2025, Reps. Barrett, Huizenga, and James all voted for the Republican Tax Law, which made the biggest cuts to Medicaid in the history of the program, putting hundreds of thousands of Michiganders at risk of losing health care coverage. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen James, Huizenga, and Barrett to reverse the Medicaid cuts that are stripping away health care from Michiganders.
