Michigan Households Face Highest Tariff Burden in the Nation as Barrett and Huizenga Dodge Questions

As Canada retaliates with tariffs against American goods, Michigan’s auto and agricultural industries are “wary” of further rising costs this new development could bring. But this week Congressmen Bill Huizenga (MI-04) and Tom Barrett (MI-07) refused to take accountability for their role in backing the tariffs that have cost Michigan $5,619 per household, the highest price tag in the nation.

At an event in Kalamazoo Tuesday, Rep. Huizenga’s team screened out questions about the trade war with Canada. Rep. Barrett, asked on Tuesday about President Trump derailing negotiations with Canada, dodged the question, saying he “wasn’t party to those negotiations,” and “can’t say with certainty whether that did or didn’t happen.” Today, Barrett said he believed Trump was “in pursuit” of a trade deal that would be “mutually beneficial.” 

“Lumber is the biggest cost for my business, and these tariffs have made it worse every month.” said Michael, a Michigan furniture business owner. “The tariffs affect so many who are trying to run a business or raise a family here in Michigan. Congressmen Barrett and Huizenga need to answer for their vote that is making it harder for businesses like mine to survive.”

Reps. Barrett and Huizenga refuse to hold Trump accountable for perpetuating the trade war that is driving up prices, and worse, they both voted to continue the tariffs in February. Tariffs have driven up the cost of school supplies, groceries, and building materials, and Michigan consumers and businesses stand to be heavily impacted by added tariffs. 

With costs continuing to rise, Representatives Barrett and Huizenga need to answer to Michigan families affected by these tariffs. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen Huizenga and Barrett to oppose the tariffs that are raising costs for hardworking Michiganders.
