Michigan Families For Fair Care Hosts “Priced Out at the Pump” Gas Card Giveaway in Kalamazoo

On Thursday, Michigan Families for Fair Care and Progress Michigan hosted “Priced Out at the Pump,” a free gas card giveaway at Farrell Park in Kalamazoo, to provide direct relief for families paying record high gas and diesel prices. Attendees received $25 gas cards and had the opportunity to talk with neighbors about what is driving the high prices.

In September, gas in Michigan hit its highest price per gallon since 2022, and diesel hit its highest ever price in the same month. From families driving their kids to school, to farmers and school buses relying on diesel, everyone is feeling the pain of many months of rising gas and diesel prices.

“Gas prices in Michigan have been some of the highest I’ve ever seen these last few months, so I started riding my bike to work to save money,” said Cam, who lives in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District. “It’s a sacrifice I had to make so I could afford to pay the rest of my monthly bills. And I know so many other families are facing the same impossible choice right now between filling up the car with gas and putting food on the table.”

The average family in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District has already paid an additional $703 for gas since the Iran War started. Congressman Bill Huizenga, who represents MI-04, voted last month to continue the Iran War—his sixth time voting in support of the conflict. With no end to the conflict in sight, families in MI-04 and across the state are concerned that the prices of gas and diesel will only continue to increase.
