Michigan Households Are Paying $3,500 More, Thanks To James, Barrett, And Huizenga
Michigan families have Reps. Bill Huizenga (MI-04), John James (MI-10), and Tom Barrett (MI-07) to thank for higher prices on everything from groceries to health care. According to a recent report, the average U.S. household has spent at least $3,500 more on goods and services since Trump and Republicans took control of the government.
After the three Michigan Republicans voted against restoring Affordable Care Act tax credits in January, health care costs skyrocketed. Monthly premiums are up more than 50 percent on average, and deductibles have hit record highs.
Reps. Huizenga, James, and Barrett also backed the Trump tariffs that are raising the price of goods, with grocery prices up 4 percent over the past year. Michigan’s auto industry, which supports more than 1.2 million jobs statewide, has been hit especially hard as tariffs drive up production costs for automakers.
Energy costs are up, too. Gas prices are averaging $4.36 a gallon in Michigan, with drivers in Lansing paying as much as $4.43. The war in Iran is pushing them higher, and all three congressmen voted to keep it going — Barrett in April, and Huizenga and James just two weeks ago.
“Every time Congressman Huizenga has had the chance to lower costs, he has voted no,” said Mary Jo, a retiree who lives in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District. “We can’t afford our premiums, the grocery bill keeps climbing, and we’re driving less because of the price of gas. I wish Congressman Huizenga would stop making it harder just to get by.”
From health care cuts to costly tariffs to a never-ending war, Trump and Republicans in Congress have broken every promise to lower costs for American families. Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Reps. Huizenga, James, and Barrett to finally stand up for their constituents and work to bring costs down.
