The Unkindest Cut: MI-04 Families Rally To Demand Congressman Huizenga Reverse His Medicaid Cuts

This afternoon, Michigan Families for Fair Care joined Indivisible and dozens of local community members outside the Portage office of Congressman Bill Huizenga (MI-04) to protest the Medicaid cuts he voted for and to demand he reverse the harm done to sick and vulnerable families across the district.

Rep. Huizenga voted for the Republican Tax Law that slashed billions from Medicaid, threatening healthcare coverage for over 170,000 Michiganders  including people with disabilities, children, and elderly individuals. The stakes came into sharper focus this week as a court weighs a rule stemming from the Republican Tax Law that would make it harder for sick people to keep their Medicaid coverage. Holding signs and sharing personal stories, attendees pressed the Congressman to answer for a vote they say puts his own constituents' health at risk.

"Medicaid isn't a line item to us, it’s a lifeline. As someone whose child is disabled, we rely on Medicaid. It's how people just like me can keep their health care going, which for so many right now is already unattainable. When Congressman Huizenga voted for these cuts, he voted against families like mine, here in his own backyard." said Kim, a local resident whose family relies on Medicaid. "People went to his office today because we deserve a representative who will fight for our healthcare, not take it away."

Congressman Huizenga made his choice in Washington. Now his constituents are making theirs. Michigan Families for Fair Care will continue to hold events to ensure the community does not forget who put their self interest over access to health care. The people in this district have made it clear they will not stop until he reverses these cuts. The Congressman can do something to protect the lives of the people he was elected to represent.
