NEW AD: MICHIGAN SUBSTANCE ABUSE THERAPIST CALLS OUT CONGRESSMAN HUIZENGA FOR SUPPORTING CUTS THAT THREATEN MEDICAID COVERAGE FOR ADDICTION TREATMENT

Today, Michigan Families for Fair Care premiered a new ad  featuring Jeannette, a substance abuse therapist, describing how Congressman Bill Huizenga’s vote in Congress threaten the Medicaid coverage that thousands of people across Michigan’s 4th Congressional District depend on for addiction treatment and recovery services, while giving tax breaks for billionaires.

“I work every day with people who are fighting to get their lives back, and for most of them, Medicaid is the only thing standing between them and losing access to treatment altogether. Congressman Huizenga voted for a law that threatens to cut that lifeline for thousands of Michigan families. These are families who are already doing everything right, showing up for appointments, following their treatment plans, trying to rebuild.” said Jeanette, a substance abuse therapist from Benton Harbor. “Addiction doesn’t wait for politicians to act. Congressman Huizenga, stop threatening the Medicaid coverage that keeps people alive and in recovery, your constituents need you to stand up for them, not against them.”

Medicaid is the primary source of coverage for substance use disorder treatment across Michigan, funding medication-assisted treatment, counseling, and recovery support services that give people a real path back to their lives. For thousands of Michigan residents already in recovery, or fighting to get there, that coverage is the difference between getting better and losing everything.

Transcript of "Jeannette" below:

JEANNETTE: I meet people when they're really at a low point in their life and they can't see a way out. Medicaid is really what people rely on. I've been there.

I've seen it when people have lost their Medicaid coverage. They're back in that very dangerous position.

Medicaid is a lifeline for my patients. Congressman Bill Huizenga voted to take that away from them, giving tax breaks to billionaires, instead.

I do everything I can for my patients. Bill Huizenga needs to do more for Michigan.
