This Mother’s Day Get Mom What She Really Wants: Lower Prices
Michigan Families for Fair Care and Detroit Action helped to gather moms outside of Representative John James and Bill Huizenga’s office to urge him to listen to the voices of mothers across his district. During this event community members called on Rep. James and Huizenga to stop supporting policies that are making life harder for working families. The Republican Tax Law, which they both voted for, has gutted services like Medicaid, a program that has paid for nearly half of all births in our country, just to give tax breaks to billionaires.
“Mother's Day is supposed to be about celebrating the women who hold families together, but for too many moms in this district, it's just another reminder of how much harder things have gotten. I see mothers skipping their own needs so their kids can have what they need to flourish, but it's only getting worse.” Kim, MI-04 resident. “Congressman Huizenga voted for a law that threatens the health coverage thousands of families here depend on, and he's backed tariffs that have driven up the cost of everything from groceries to medicine. Mothers in this district deserve a congressman who actually fights for them. Congressman Huizenga, give your constituents their money back and stop the policies that are pricing Michigan families out of their health care.”
In order to communicate these thoughts, participants wrote and delivered heartfelt Mother’s Day notes to his office, sharing their stories and hopes for a better future.
“We came here today to deliver letters from Moms to Bill Huizenga to let him know how his votes have affected working moms. And let him know how he’s raised the cost of living for mothers in Michigan. ” Annie, resident of MI-04, “He did not bother to come in today. We’re just trying to communicate with him how his votes have impacted mothers today. His staff was apparently not able to be bothered at 1 o’clock on a business day.”
Rep. James and Huizenga’s support of the Republican Tax Law has cut essential support to nutrition assistance as well, increasing financial strain on Michigan mothers and families. Mothers across the state rely on SNAP to feed their kids, especially as costs keep rising. With affordability being top of mind this Mother’s Day season it is essential that Reps. Huizenga and James listen to his constituents' needs in an increasingly expensive world.
Mothers across Michigan deserve policies that support their families, not make ends meet harder. Michigan Families for Fair Care will continue to hold our congressmen accountable via an ad campaign highlighting the economic impacts of their votes.
