Stay in Your Lane John James: Michigan Families Demand Action as Gas Prices Strain Household Budgets
On Wednesday, Michigan Families for Fair Care brought together residents of Michigan’s 10th Congressional District in Warren for “Empty Tanks, Full Voices Against High Gas Prices,” a community event that made clear how rising fuel costs are reshaping daily life for working families. Residents gathered outside a gas station to turn a routine stop at the pump into a space for accountability. Here constituents shared how higher prices have forced difficult tradeoffs and called on Representative John James to act.
“I’m fortunate because I’m retired, so you know, I can kinda pick and choose where I go. But at the same time I look at the cost of everything. Gas prices don’t affect just gas prices. It’s also the price of groceries. It’s the price of just everything that’s in the economy. ” said Joel, MI-10 resident and veteran. “We have adults that are going without food at times so their children can eat. We’re in the richest country in the world. That should never be happening.”

Throughout the event, participants connected these rising costs to broader policy decisions supported by their Congressman, John James. Representative James’ vote for the Republican Tax Law directed billions toward military spending by cutting programs like Medicaid, and SNAP that over 1.5 million Michiganders rely on. Attendees emphasized that increased war spending does little to address higher prices at the pump and leaves little funds available to actually support residents.
“I’m managing but I can feel it. I definitely can see it in the people around me. It shouldn’t be this hard. My girlfriend and I caretake for her grandmother and it’s getting her to where she needs to go for doctor’s appointments, errands, and prescriptions. And it all depends on being able to afford gas,” said Brian, MI-10 resident. “That’s not optional, that’s just life. When it gets more expensive, everything gets harder.”
“We should be able to live where we have fun moments in our lives and not stress every single day and this current administration, with the support of the Republican Tax Law bill has made our lives [upside] down.” said Jill, MI-10 resident and regional director for Michigan Families for Fair Care. “How are we going to afford our bills or how are we going to afford food on our table? How are we going to get our kids to child care?”
Michigan families are doing everything they can to stay afloat, but they cannot keep absorbing higher costs driven by decisions beyond their control and are calling for leadership that recognizes the urgency of the moment and takes action to ease the burden. Michigan Families for Fair Care is urging Representative James to prioritize policies that lower costs for working families instead of fighting for billionaire tax breaks.
