Alarm Bells Keep Ringing: Michigan Congressional Republicans Votes Yes On The Farm Bill Leaving Thousands To Fend For Themselves

The passage of this Farm Bill represents a serious setback for families and farmers across Michigan. By voting for this legislation, Congressman John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga continue their support of a policy direction that fails to address the growing food assistance crisis at a time when costs are already rising for families across the country.

“This vote reflects a failure to meet the moment. At a time when Michigan families need stronger support to afford basic necessities, this Farm Bill moves in the opposite direction, making it harder to access food while doing little to address the pressures facing those who produce it.” said Steve Lawson, executive director for Michigan Families for Fair Care. “Michigan deserves leadership that understands what is at stake when kids, families, and the elderly cannot afford to eat.”

In 2026, sweeping federal changes to SNAP are already taking effect. These changes are not happening in a vacuum, they come alongside policies that shift more of the financial responsibility onto states like Michigan, increasing costs by tens of millions of dollars and threatening the long-term stability of the program. For families this isn’t about policy, it’s about survival. SNAP supports over a million Michiganders, many of whom are already working, and when access is restricted, the result is fewer meals, greater reliance on food banks, and deeper financial instability.
