Michigan Republicans Must Vote No On The Bill That Leaves Thousands Of Michiganders Hungry
This week, Congress is set to vote on a new farm bill. While the Farm Bill typically reauthorizes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the current iteration of the bill fails to reverse the massive cuts to SNAP made last year by the Republican Tax Law passed by Congressmen John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.
Across communities like Warren, Lansing, and Kalamazoo, the impact of these changes is already being felt. Food banks are reporting increased demand as more working families turn to emergency food assistance to make ends meet. In Michigan, providers say visits have risen significantly following SNAP changes, with one food bank reporting demand up roughly 15% compared to last year, evidence that families are struggling to afford enough food even while working. SNAP is a lifeline for more than 1.4 million Michiganders.
“John James needs to stand with his constituents and vote no on this version of the farm bill,” said Rebecca, an MI-10 constituent and SNAP recipient. “At a time when families across the 10th district are already facing rising costs and struggling to buy food, this proposal doesn’t reverse the cuts that put us in this position. Michigan families deserve leadership that protects access to SNAP, not policies that make it harder to eat.”
Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen John James, Tom Barrett, and Bill Huizenga to stand with their constituents and vote no on this version of the Farm Bill, which fails to reverse SNAP cuts.
