What Is It Good For: Michigan Families For Fair Care Condemns Republican Plans To Cut Health Care To Pay For More War

As Michigan families are already struggling under the weight of skyrocketing gas prices and historic cuts to health care, House Republicans, including Congressmen Tom Barrett, John James, and Bill Huizenga, are now eyeing another round of health care cuts to fund a $200 billion supplemental spending bill for the war in Iran.

"Michigan families are already paying the price for Republican priorities at the gas pump, at the pharmacy, and at the doctor's office," said Joel, veteran and Congressman John James constituent. "Republicans gutted Medicaid and refused to bring back ACA tax credits to hand tax breaks to billionaires and now they want to go back and cut even more so they can fund an unpopular war that families across this state never asked for. Thousands of people in these districts are already struggling to afford coverage after the tax credits expired. Another round could push them over the edge entirely. Congressmen Barrett, James, and Huizenga need to make a choice: are you here to represent Michigan families, or are you going to keep putting them on the chopping block to pay for Washington's priorities? Tell your leadership: not one more cut to health care."

Reports confirmed this week that Republican leadership is actively exploring reductions to federal health care programs, including cuts to the subsidies that help lower-income families afford coverage through the Affordable Care Act, as an offset to fund the ongoing military conflict. This comes after Republicans already enacted the largest cuts to Medicaid in history through the Republican Tax Law, cuts that are already causing thousands of Michigan families to lose coverage or face premiums that have more than doubled for some. Now, with gas prices topping $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022, a direct result of the Iran war's disruption to global oil supplies, families in Michigan's 4th, 7th, and 10th Congressional Districts are being squeezed from every direction.
