Congressman Tom Barrett, You Failed Michiganders

Representative Tom Barrett (MI-07) has now voted twice to support the devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in the Republican Tax Scam. This bill affects the health care of 70 million elderly, low-income, or disabled Americans and positions 11 million people at the brink of being uninsured. It also reduces support for critical food programs for vulnerable populations like veterans and people who are homeless. With his vote, Rep. Barrett has sealed the fate of hundreds of thousands of Michiganders who rely on these essential programs including thousands in his district alone.

MI-07 constituent and Medicaid recipient Cynthia Burton issued the following statement after Barrett's final vote:

“Tom Barrett has now voted two times to strip away our health care. My husband and I both rely on Medicaid, we’ve gone through trial after trial, but now I am deeply afraid of what the future holds. These cuts were forced on us in order to hand out more tax breaks to billionaires. That is just not right. Congressman Barrett had repeated opportunities to stand up for us, and both times he sided with billionaires and corporations  over the health and security of his own constituents. This isn’t just about his donor’s bottom line. It's about real lives that will be harmed by his decisions. He’s turned his back on the people of his own state and community, something we won’t soon forget.”
