Growing Age, Shrinking Care: Huizenga, James and Barrett Must Answer for Medicaid Cuts That Put Seniors at Risk

Michigan families across the 4th, 7th, and 10th districts are already preparing for the consequences of sweeping Medicaid cuts backed by Congressmen Bill Huizenga, John James, and Tom Barrett. Now, the Trump administration is moving to go even further by cracking down on Medicaid payments to states, a proposal that could strip hundreds of billions of dollars from the program over the next decade and leave states with fewer resources to care for residents.

At the same time, Michigan is aging rapidly, with experts warning that the state’s elderly population is creating looming consequences for families, workers, and care systems. As more Michiganders retire and need long-term care, Medicaid becomes even more critical for seniors, people with disabilities, and families already struggling with rising costs.

“It’s hard because as you grow older you believe the system has your back because you’ve spent years, and paycheck after paycheck, giving to it. Then one day you realize, there’s only a system if the people meant to take care of it actually do. Our system now is not working for people like me, and the only people being looked out for are billionaires,“ said Cynthia, a Medicaid recipient and MI-07 resident. “There’s nothing else to do but fight for what we need, and Congressman Barrett needs to know that we deserve room at the table too.”

Instead of protecting Michigan seniors and families, Huizenga, James, and Barrett supported Medicaid cuts that set the stage for deeper harm. Now the Trump administration is advancing a proposal that could further disrupt care for recipients, leaving states like Michigan to make impossible choices about who gets care, what services remain available, and how providers keep their doors open.

Congressmen James, Barrett, and Huizenga owe their constituents an explanation for why they backed Medicaid cuts while Michigan families are preparing for the fallout and older residents are facing growing uncertainty about the care they will need.
