Michigan Small Businesses Sound the Alarm on Tariffs Backed by Huizenga, Barrett, and James

As Michigan small businesses continue facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, Congressmen Bill Huizenga, Tom Barrett, and John James’s support for sweeping tariff policies is putting additional strain on local employers already operating on tight margins. Michigan businesses in particular are struggling to access so-called tariff refunds, but are still experiencing the impact of lasting tariffs. A recent survey conducted by the Michigan Retailers Association found that nearly 75% of Michigan retailers reported seeing a negative or strongly negative impact from tariffs since April 2025, while more than half said uncertainty surrounding tariffs has also harmed their businesses.

The survey found that retailers are experiencing rising inventory costs, disruptions to future planning, declining sales volumes, and higher operational expenses as a result of ongoing tariff policies. More than 83% of retailers surveyed reported having to alter their business strategies to manage tariff-related costs, including raising prices, finding new suppliers, and delaying or cancelling planned projects.

“Congressman Huizenga may not see the impact of these tariffs in Washington, but small business owners like me feel it every day,” said Brian, an MI-04 resident and coffee shop owner. “Coffee beans, equipment, cups, and other supplies all cost more because of these policies, and there’s only so much a small business can absorb before it hurts workers, customers, and the community. Congressman Huizenga supported these tariffs, but local businesses here in Michigan are the ones paying the price.”
