ICYMI: Congressmen John James And Tom Barrett Are Pushing Families Into Medical Debt Crisis

Congressmen John James (MI-10) and Tom Barrett (MI-7) continue down the path of their reckless health care agenda that threatens to push thousands of Michigan families into crushing medical debt. A new report from Third Way reveals that the GOP's proposed $1.1 trillion in health care cuts could increase medical debt by up to $22,800 per family, adding $50 billion in unpaid medical bills nationwide.

The Congressional Budget Office projects that 16 million Americans will lose health coverage if the bill, supported by Reps. James and Barrett, passes in its current form. In Michigan, hundreds of thousands of Medicaid recipients are at risk, and an increase to their medical debt will just raise the burden placed on working class families and providers alike.

"Congressmen James and Barrett are willing to sacrifice the financial security of Michigan families to fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy," said Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care. "When families lose health coverage, they don't stop getting sick—they just go bankrupt trying to pay for care. These representatives have made it clear that billionaire tax cuts matter more than protecting Michigan families from financial ruin."
