THE HEALTH CARE CRISIS IS HERE: MICHIGAN FAMILIES AT RISK OF LOSING HEALTH CARE AS COSTS OUTPACES PREMIUM PAYMENTS

Michigan families are facing a growing healthcare crisis as rising costs force thousands off their insurance plans, leaving many without coverage and at serious financial and medical risk. New data shows that roughly 14 percent of Americans who enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans this year failed to make their first premium payment. This is largely driven by the expiration of federal tax credits that had kept coverage affordable.

For Michigan residents, the consequences are immediate and severe. Premiums that once cost a manageable monthly premium have surged by hundreds of dollars, affecting nearly 500,000 Michiganders relying on the marketplace for their health care and pushing working families, seniors, and individuals with chronic conditions out of the healthcare system altogether. As a result, about 40,000 fewer Michigan residents have signed up for Affordable Care Act health insurance plans this year.

“I worry how much longer I’ll be able to afford to keep my plan if prices keep going up. My premium went from something I could manage to hundreds more a month. It takes a toll on a household budget.,” said Diane, a MI-07 resident and Congressman Barrett constituent. “Meanwhile, Congressman Barrett pushed through tax breaks for billionaires while people like me are being priced out of basic health care. It feels like we are being left behind.”

Healthcare costs have become one of the top financial pressures for families across the state. Yet Congressmen James, Barrett, and Huizenga refuse to consider options that increase health care coverage to Michiganders. Now, national enrollment in ACA plans has already declined, dropping from over 24 million last year to 23 million in 2026. Projections show a potential 17 percent to 26 percent decrease as more Americans are priced out. The loss of coverage is not just a personal burden. It also has broader consequences for the entire healthcare system. As healthier individuals drop out due to rising costs, insurers are left covering a sicker and more expensive population, which can drive premiums even higher in the future.

Michigan Families for Fair Care is calling on Congressmen Tom Barrett, Bill Huizenga, and John James to take immediate action to address rising healthcare costs and protect access to affordable coverage for working families across the state. How many more Michigan families have to lose coverage before action is taken?
