Congressman Tom Barrett, Your District Is Calling For You To Do The Right Thing

Today, the Senate passed its own version of the Republican Tax Scam and it will now return to the House. This most recent version of the bill affects the health care of 70 million elderly, low-income, or disabled Americans and positions 11 million people at the brink of being uninsured. The bill also reduces support for critical food programs for vulnerable populations like veterans and people who are homeless.

Constituents from across Congressman Barrett’s district have made it clear that this bill would have lasting, damaging effects to Michigan. In May, Representative Tom Barrett (MI-07) voted for the GOP Tax Scam that makes severe cuts to Medicaid, and SNAP, but now he has a chance to actually stand up for the people in his district.

Michiganders will go without health care; people will go to bed hungry and unable to feed their families. Congressman Barrett, your constituents' health shouldn't be at risk for the sake of tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. MI-07 constituent Peggy Wiles issued the following statement as the bill returns to the House:

"In my lifetime, I have seen the benefits of Medicaid firsthand. It gave me a chance when I needed it most by providing me with the resources necessary to see the health care team I rely on, and situations like mine are not unique. I'm disappointed that our Congressman Tom Barrett would consider voting in favor of a plan that prioritizes the profit of ultra-rich billionaires over the lives of Michiganders. As his constituents we will continue our fight to make sure he is held accountable for his actions. Congressman Barrett, listen to the people you were elected to represent. People's quality of life is severely at risk of plummeting, and you will have a hand to play before it is all said and done. Do the right thing, vote no on this bill.”
