ICYMI: Congressman Tom Barrett Starts Feeling The Heat Over His Own Votes, But That Won’t Lower Health Care Bills
As open enrollment period comes to a close, constituents of MI-7 are reminded of how much more they will have to pay for their health care due to actions from their congressional representative. Congressman Tom Barrett claims the Affordable Care Act made healthcare expensive, and dismissed claims that he “voted to cut Medicaid” yet his own voting record shows he's done nothing to help working families afford coverage and instead repeatedly voted against policy that would have lowered the price of healthcare.

"Congressman Barrett can't have it both ways," said Steve Lawson, Executive Director of Michigan Families for Fair Care. "He says healthcare is too expensive, but then he voted to cut hundreds of billions from Medicaid—healthcare for the most vulnerable people in his district, and raised costs. He refused to vote to bring back ACA premium tax credits that would save families hundreds of dollars per month. And when he had the chance to actually lower costs for working people, he instead voted for the Republican Tax Law, which gave tax cuts to the wealthiest corporations and individuals. If Barrett truly cared about making healthcare affordable, he wouldn't have voted to strip coverage from 260,000 Michiganders. His actions speak louder than his words, if he wishes to change that he can join the effort to repeal these harmful healthcare cuts and prevent Michigan residents from having to go without healthcare."
Barrett voted for the Republican Tax Law on July 3, 2025, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will increase the number of uninsured Americans by 10 million by 2034. Last week, he refused to support a measure to bring back ACA premium tax credits, which is estimated to leave tens of thousands of people across Michigan's 7th Congressional Districts with premium increases of more than 100%.
