Over the last two years, Michigan Families for Fair Care made sure constituents knew where Reps. Tom Barrett (MI-07) and Bill Huizenga (MI-04) stood on the issues hitting their wallets, from voting to cut Medicaid and SNAP to supporting costly tariffs and the war in Iran. Tonight, constituents in Michigan's 4th and 7th Congressional Districts chose new representation. Michiganders have made their voices heard, and they’re ready for representation that will work to lower their costs.
“As a family that relies on Medicaid and SNAP to afford health care and groceries, we’ve lived with a lot of uncertainty since our representative Tom Barrett voted to cut those programs,” said Cynthia, a resident of Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “I’m glad that speaking out against these harmful cuts made a difference. It shows that our voices and our votes matter, and that we can elect representatives who will work to make life more affordable for us.”
“My son is disabled, and Medicaid pays for the prescriptions that keep him healthy,” said Kim, who lives in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District. “Ever since Congressman Huizenga voted for these cuts, I’ve worried about what would happen if we lost that coverage. Now I have some hope that we’ll be able to turn things around and protect healthcare for families like mine.”
Michigan Families for Fair Care will continue its efforts to raise awareness for the state of our health care, nutritional programs, and congressional efforts to give tax breaks to the wealthy. As we look back, we are proud of all the work we’ve accomplished so far:
Launched an early seven-figure TV accountability campaign that put real Michiganders, including nurses, seniors, and small business owners on screen to tell their story about how this Republican-crafted economy was not working for them.
Hosted over a dozen events across the state, with the help of partner organizations like Punks with Lunch, we provided neighbors and families with coats, gloves, and groceries as costs continued to climb.
As health care costs increased, we sounded the alarm and pushed for our Republican elected officials to restore health care tax credits that helped millions across the country stay insured.
Ran food drives that collected thousands of dollars worth of food to help support families impacted by SNAP cuts.
As the Iran war kicked off, we held events to inform the public about the injustice at the pump, and gave away hundreds of gas cards to help lighten the burden on many Michiganders wallets.
The fight for an affordable Michigan doesn’t end overnight, but it starts with hope.
